Spring Goalie Drabble

Written as a birthday Drabble

YyehSchuhh.” Cal’s head dipped down into his elbow again.

“Bless you.” Carter offered…again. The first thing he’d heard when he’d gotten up was Cal sneezing, and it didn’t seem like this was going to be the end of it.

“Thanks.” Cal sniffled, closing his itchy eyes.

“You ok?” Carter asked the man who had taken him under his wing. He’d been staying with Cal off and on as he’d been called up and sent down, and solidly for the last month. He’d never seen him like this, even when colds and flus ripped through the locker room.

Cal shrugged. “I’ll be fine.” He pressed his hand against his nose.

“Dude, you’ve sneezed 10 times so far today – or at least since I’ve gotten up.”

“Thank you for keeping trahhHayahhShoo!”

“11. Bless you.”

Cal scowled. “I can see the shot counting on the bench has honed your math skills.” Came the snarky comment.

“Seriously, though. I’ve never seen you sneeze like this.” Carter persisted, concerned furrowing his brow .

Cal grabbed a tissue from the box at his side for a loud blow. “‘S just allergies.” He mumbled. “Happens every spring.”

Carter nodded. “Hayfever?”

“Yeah. Surprised you’re not sneezing.”

The younger goalie shrugged. “I don’t have pollen allergies. Dogs, dust, feathers, horses, but nothing seasonal.”

HuhEhSchoo!” Cal’s chuckle was interrupted by his sneeze. “Everything avoidable, you mean.” He blew his nose again. “I promise I’m not usually this bad, but after the game ran late last night, and then we got to talking shop, I fell asleep without taking my pill. Waiting on it to kick in now. EhhSchuhh.” He ended his statement with his nose buried in his tissue.

“Bl-“

HehSchuhh!”

Carter barely had a chance to open his mouth when Cal cut him off with a third sneeze.

HuhhSchusshhh!”

“You’re really making it hard for me to bless you.” He grinned.

“Don’t even bother.” Came Cal’s stuffy sniffle. He paused to blow his nose. “I won’t be done for awhile.”

Carter offered up a sympathetic smile. “In that case, why don’t I tackle breakfast this morning?”
